JAXA and ESA sign the Framework Agreement
For a Strategic Partnership on Climate Action
JAXA and the European Space Agency (ESA) signed the Framework Agreement for a strategic partnership on climate action on June 25th, 2025. The signing ceremony was held during the Living Planet Symposium in Vienna, hosted by ESA.
JAXA and ESA have cooperated in various fields of Earth observation, including ground station support for both agencies’ Earth observation missions, data exchange, data calibration/validation, scientific research, and data application. The cooperation culminated by the launch of EarthCARE, which was jointly developed by two agencies, and joint research to improve the accuracy of global warming predictions is now being proceeded. This Framework Agreement aims to provide Earth observation data and tools that support decision-making related to climate action.
During the signing ceremony, Hironori Maejima (JAXA’s Senior Chief Officer of Earth Observation Missions, Space Technology Directorate I) stated “JAXA hopes to strengthen our partnership with ESA for addressing the global challenge of climate change.
