IAF Special Award to NASA – ESA – JAXA Earth Observing Dashboard Joint analysis website using Earth observation data

The joint analysis website of Earth Observation data “Earth Observing Dashboard”, developed and operated by three agencies, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), received “IAF Special Award on Space on Climate Protection.”

The “Earth Observing Dashboard” was established in June 2020 with the NASA-ESA-JAXA cooperation as the COVID-19 Earth Observing Dashboard, and later in March 2021, its scope was extended to global environmental change. Following its renewal in May 2022, the dashboard currently continues to publish new analysis case studies. The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) has international activities to promote astronautical development and research for peaceful purposes, and presented “IAF Special Award on Space on Climate Protection” to the “Earth Observing Dashboard” as an excellent example showing that the space sector can have a positive impact against climate change.

On Tuesday 23 May, the awards ceremony was held during the opening ceremony of the Global Space Conference on Climate Change (GLOC) 2023. Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General, Simonetta Cheli, Director of Earth Observation Programmes and Head of ESA/ESRIN, Susie Perez Quinn, NASA Chief of Staff, Karen M. St. Germain, NASA Director of the Earth Science Division, and Koji Terada, JAXA Vice President accepted the award on behalf of three agencies.

JAXA expects Earth observation data to be leveraged as objective perspectives and information to widely understand global challenges including environmental change and climate change, and social and economic impact caused by them through the “Earth Observing Dashboard” and we will continue to contribute.
